Outline • Who are we • Timber Reallocation • Certification • Forest Stewardship Plans
Mandate • To optimize net revenue to the province, within the parameters dictated by our benchmarking mandate and sound forest management practices • To provide a credible reference point for costs and pricing of timber harvested from public land in BC • To provide opportunities for customers to purchase timber in an open and competitive market.
Mandate - in English • To provide as much revenue as possible to the Province while ensuring that we • apply sustainable forest management practices and • sell timber in an open and competitive market.
Timber Reallocation • Provincially, 20% of the Provincial harvest • In Mackenzie Forest District, 24% of the District harvest • Operating area selection in progress • Finalization of operating areas expected early in 2005.
Certification • International Organization of Standardization (ISO) registration expected in Fall 2005 • environmental policy • structured procedures • Canadian Standards Association (CSA) certification being considered • meet Canadian Council for Forest Ministers criteria • sustainable forest management plan
Forest Stewardship Plans • Broad planning areas (called Forest Development Units -- FDUs) • Provides results or strategies for established objectives across the FDUs • Elk, Goat, Stone Sheep and Caribou ungulate winter range • Mugaha Marsh Sensitive Area • Old Seral • Scenic areas • Non-legal objectives to be managed outside of FSP
Prince George Forest Stewardship Plan • Currently out for public review and comment • Deadline for review is December 22, 2004 • Interested parties will be contacted prior to harvest commencement • FSP is legal document • Background and Objectives document is not legal • http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/bcts/tpg/
