Cattle * Cows – mature females that can reproduce * Steers – castrated male cattle that cannot reproduce * Bullocks – young male bulls that cannot reproduce * Heifer – young female cattle; has not had offspring
Cattle (continued) • Calf – young cattle to young to reproduce • Bulls – male cattle that can reproduce • Beef – meat from cattle • Calving: act of giving birth
Sheep • Ram – mature male sheep • Ewe lamb – young female sheep • Ram lamb – young male sheep • Lamb – newborn sheep or young sheep, also the meat from a young sheep • Ewe – mature female sheep • Mutton – meat from a sheep older than one year of age • Wether – castrated male sheep • Lambing—act of giving birth
Swine - Hogs • Barrow – castrated male pig or hog • Boar – mature male hog • Gilt – young female pig • Shoat – young male pig • Pig – newborn or very young pig • Sow – mature female • Pork – meat from swine • Farrowing—the act of giving birth
Chickens • Hen – mature female chicken • Capon – castrated male chicken • Cockerel—young male • Chick – newborn chicken • Cock (Rooster) – mature male chicken • Pullet – young female chicken • Layer – hen used for laying eggs • Broiler/Fryer – chickens grown to eat • Hatch—the act of being “born”
