Background 01 Completion of Project Phase 1 Project Phase 1: 2013 to 2015 Introduction of electron beam technologies to beginning stage countries and facilitation of the application of the EB in the region Enhanced South-south and triangular cooperation in the region 02 Continuous Regional Demands During the implementation period of Project Phase 1 (2013-2015) During the RCA Policy Making Meetings • Participating GPs’ continuous demands for a follow-up project • Taking note of the successful implementation of the project phase 1, GPs encouraged RCA Regional Office to explore possibility of continuation of the project (44th RCA GCM)

Overview of Project Phase 2 01 Summary of Project Phase 2 RCA/UNOSSC Project on Electron Beam Applications for Value Addition to Food and Industrial Products and Degradation of Environmental Pollutants in the Asia Pacific region (Phase 2) • Duration: 2017-2019 (3 years) • Budget: $500,000 (UNOSSC: $350,000, RCARO: $150,000) • Participating GPs (15) :Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Korea (LC), Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, • Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam • Objectives: • To improve the quality of environment and living conditions of the Asia-Pacific region through facilitation of the application of electron beam technologies in areas of agriculture, industry and environment treatment; • To effectively scale up the knowledge and expertise gained through Phase 1 with strategy of training the trainees and dispatching experts to countries in need; and • To strengthen the South-south and triangular cooperation

Project Implementation and its Strategy 01 Analysis of Country Status • Essential for effective implementation of a project • Analysis of national development status and plans in the areas of the application of EB technologies based on the country reports and survey results • Identifying needs and demands of the countries • Important for a systematic and managed cooperation among the participating countries • Varied level of technical expertise and knowledge • Identifying shared needs and issues; Targets of each activity; Roles of the participating countries

Project Implementation and its Strategy 03 Two-step Strategy: “Train the Trainers” Dissemination of gained knowledge, skills, know-hows to widen the coverage of beneficiaries • RTCs will be carried out in three areas – agriculture, industry and environment treatment in Advanced Radiation Technology Institute (ARTI)* in Korea • Phase 2 focuses more on advanced lectures and on-site trainings * ARTI: a radiation specialized research institute with eminent R&D results in the field of radiation advanced materials engineering, environmental engineering, biotechnology, breeding research and radiation equipment. Designated as IAEA Collaborating Centre for Nuclear Application Technologies

Project Implementation and its Strategy 04 Expert Missions – Outreaching Local Communities Dispatch of regional experts • Target countries to be decided based on the country request forms • Expert missions: consultations on building human & institutional capacities, demonstration of experiments, on-site training, delivery of lectures • * will be implemented in conjunction with national workshop/training course to widen coverage of national beneficiaries • Experts from the region ⇒ direct response to the pressing issues of local communities, strengthen domestic technical and managerial capabilities

  11. Project Work Plan Work Plan for 2017-2019 • Reduction of one annual review meeting (4→3 policy meetings) • With the available budget, • 3 RTCs on three areas in ARTI, Korea, inviting approx. 15 trainees • 6 expert missions to the countries, 2 experts for 4 days
