ELEMENT OF THE DAY • 46 – Palladium – Pd • Palladium, like gold, can be pounded into thin sheets less than 1,000 atoms thick. • Palladium is also used in catalytic converters, which turn unburned fuel into CO2 and water, making exhaust much cleaner. • Solid palladium metal can actually absorb hydrogen. The crystal lattice of palladium atoms leaves enough space for hydrogen atoms to get into the empty spaces.
