    1. Water Scarcity for Irrigation Purposes in Semi Arid Areas Project Project .. Budget US$ 1,000,000

    2. Project Main Idea: * shifting from traditional irrigation system to the modern systems Project Hopes: * Conserve water resources

    3. Project Activities: * Training: - Overseas training (study tour) to gain experiences in this field to Morocco or Egypt. - Field visits to areas (in Al-Ghouta) to identify the most needed areas to use the modern irrigation system, which suffer most from water scarcity (data collection). - Filed visits to areas in Syria (Governorates) already applying the modern irrigation systems * Equipment: Designing irrigation network, establishment and operation. * Awareness Campaign: Media (TV + Radio + Newspapers), Road signs, brochures and technical manuals.

    4. Why the project is necessary? Syria started to suffer seriously from water shortage: - Irregular distribution of rainfall - Limited water resources - Huge consumption (increasing population) - Agriculture sector which plays big role in the country economic, consumes around 85% from the total water use. - Traditional irrigation system is the dominated and the frequent system with low efficiency (45%)

    5. Monitoring (each 3 months): Number of local communities attending meetings and lectures, and participating in field visits + responding to interviews and questionnaires. Evaluation (after each agriculture cycle): Ability of local communities to adopt the new system and apply it in their own lands. Increasing the area (land) irrigated with the new system. Increasing yield production per hectare.

    6. The local communities which have been trained to use the irrigation modern system will continue, without external assistance, to apply it, and both capacity and leadership skills will have been enhanced.
