Out of the Mailbag Instructional Podcasts for UWC² Instructors and Course Developers with your hosts Jan Kinney, Peter Freeman and Tim McCabe
UWC²/PCE Instructors and Course Developers Most are industry professionals with full-time jobs, thus unable to attend teaching workshops. How do we reach them? We started by looking at the 2014-15 Instructor Development Survey.
Survey Results Short videos about teaching and development techniques were cited as helpful. Several questions and challenges recurred: • Learning objectives • Teaching to different skill levels • Managing large class sizes • Engaging speakers of English as an additional language
Podcasts • An alternative to videos • Accessible at instructor’s convenience • Easy and quick to produce • Instructors can submit their own questions
Existing Podcasts • Identifying effective goals and objectives • Teaching to different levels of professional experience • Managing class time • Authentic assessment and active learning
Feedback and Application Feedback form has been created. Other units in UWC², and on campus, may want to create podcasts. Podcasts are appropriate for adult learning. New episodes every few weeks.
