Maximising Performance in Year 12 • Set targets, prioritise, manage time effectively • Engage actively in every lesson • Use study periods productively • Realise that their learning is a partnership (parents, teachers, peers) • Are brutally realistic when assessing the amount of work necessary for success • Take responsibility • Maintain a balance between work, sport and studies • Celebrate well earned success Successful HSC students:
Maximising Performance in Year 12 Each Year 12 student is competing against 71 309 other students for a limited number of University places, TAFE places, Traineeships and Apprenticeships.
Maximising Performance in Year 12 To maintain a competitive standard, the “forty hour week” is a good model. + = Home Work School Work 40 + 25 15 = 40
Maximising Performance in Year 12 15 hours is a lot when you look at it all at once! But, if you chip away at it, you’ll be surprised how quickly it goes!
Maximising Performance in Year 12 Part of the plan is to record what you’ve achieved! Use the Study Register table! This is part of the celebration!!
Many students have great intentions, but don’t have a Study Structure to work with…. Maximising Performance in Year 12 So here’s one! Same time on each subject For example Half the time, covering the same work
You need to fit in 5 of these sessions a week Maximising Performance in Year 12 And the order must “cycle through”
Things to note: • Have a break between each timeslot (get up, walk around, sing) • Increases must only occur after you have completed 5 sessions at that time • Increases can only be 2 or 3 minutes per subject • Making your learning active during these times will assist • Set targets for each session or group of sessions Maximising Performance in Year 12
Tips on How to Help Your Child • Guide, support and encourage your son or daughter, and let them know that you are there when they need you • Encourage healthy eating, regular exercise, proper hydration and plenty of sleep • Don’t overload them with domestic chores, and take a “whole family” approach to supporting the student • Keep an eye on their emotional health and help them keep things in perspective Maximising Performance in Year 12
Maximising Performance in Year 12 • Tips on How to Help Your Child • Take their efforts seriously and reward them for their hard work • Give them positive feedback whenever possible – avoid nagging • Listen, be taught, be interested! • Encourage them to believe in themselves, and remind them of their goals
