Depend on each other • Greater economic diversity among the regions of the nation • Creates a more stable economy

  3. Manifest Destiny • Manifest Destiny- • The belief that the Unites States’ destiny was to expand to the Pacific Ocean and into Mexican Territory • The idea of manifest destiny was used to justify territorial expansion and settling the land • Increased westward migration

  5. Expansion into Texas • Mexico offers land grants to Americans • Causes Americans to settle in Texas • Americans bring slaves and cultural differences • Americans have uprisings- • Cause Texas to become independent • Causing US annexation of Texas • US claims Texas to be part of America

War with Mexico • Mexico angry with US over annexation of Texas • It would be like Canada claiming NY as part of Canada • Mexico attacks American settlers at the Alamo- “Remember the Alamo”-becomes war cry-promotes patriotism • President Polk promotes war with Mexico- sends troops to border to protect newly acquired land-> Mexico attacks

California Gold Rush (1849) • Discovery of gold in California causes many settlers to go west • Settlers called the 49ers • b/c of discovery of gold there is a huge population and economic boom in California • b/c of pop and eco. Boom California becomes a state in 1850 • Further stirring the pot of slavery will California be a free state or slave state?
