Grammar Parts of Speech. Verbs & Adverbs. Verb- a word that expresses action or state of being. Examples Action- run, jump, dance State of Being- have, can, does. Action verb -tells what action a subject is performing. Two categories: Transitive - an action verb that has an object

Action verb -tells what action a subject is performing. Two categories: Transitive- an action verb that has an object (Must be able to answer what or whom is be an object) Intransitive-an action verb without an object
Examples: Transitive: • I left my running shoes in my locker today. Intransitive: • Frank practiced in the gym last night.
Verb Phrase- a main verb plus one or more helping verbs. Example Breakfast is being prepared for the team. The bus should have arrived before now.
Linking verb- links the subject with another word in the sentence. Example Chris was a judge at the annual chili cook-off. That fudge is too rich for me.
Adjective- a word that modifies (describes) a noun or pronoun An adjective answers on of the following questions: What kind? Which one? How many? How much?
Two categories of Adjectives Proper adjective -is a special kind of adjective • Some French people live along the Atlantic coast. Compound Adjective -is made up of more than one word. • Downhill skiing was done by an all-star team.
Articles- the word a, an and the are a special from of ADJECTIVES So make a mental note that the words a, an, and the are Adjectives!!!!!!!

Adverb – is a word that modifies a verb, and adjective or another adverb An adverb makes the meaning of a verb, an adjective, or another adverb more precies. Althought many adverbs end in –ly, some do not. Ex: near, never, always, even, very, well, yet
Adverbs that modify VERBS Where: The guitarist jumped down from the stage. When: I was singing with my band yesterday. How? He had played the piece too quickly.
Adverbs that modify ADJECTIVES and other ADVERBS To what extent? Adjective: The music drills were very easy. Adverb: My rock group sang too loudly.
