Nouns • Noun- A noun is a word or word group that is used to name a person, place, thing or idea.
Compound Nouns • Compound Noun- is a single noun made up of two or more words used together. • The compound noun may be written as one word, as a hyphenated word, or as two or more words.
ProperNouns and Common Nouns • Proper Nouns- name a particular person, place, thing, or idea and begins with a capital letter. • Common Nouns- names any one of a group of persons, places, things, or ideas. It is usually not capitalized.
Pronouns • Pronoun- is a word that replaces the name of a person, place, thing, or idea in a sentence. • Examples: you, we, they, he, she, me, it, him, her, this ,that, them ,those, these, and each • Personal Pronoun refers to the one speaking (first person), the one spoken to (second person), or the one spoken about (third person). • Can be both singular and plural
Pronouns • Possessive pronouns- my, mine, our ours, your, yours, her, hers, his, its, their, and theirs- are personal pronouns that are used to show ownership or possession. • Some teachers prefer to call possessive pronouns adjectives. • Reflexive pronoun- refers to the subject and is necessary to the basic meaning of the sentence. • Ex: They chose new books for themselves. • Ex: She gave herself the day off from practicing. • Intensive Pronoun- emphasizes its antecedent and is unnecessary to the basic meaning of the sentence. • Ex: David himself bought a sandwich. • The award will be presented by the principal herself.
Pronouns Demonstrative Pronoun points out a specific person, place, or idea. Note: This, that, these, and those can also be used as adjectives. When these words are used to modify a noun or pronoun, they are called demonstrative adjectives. Example: Pronoun: This is a delicious apple. [This refers to apple] Adjective: This apple is delicious. [This modifies apple]
Pronouns • Indefinite Pronoun- refers to a person, a place, a thing, or an idea that may or may not be specifically named.
Pronouns • An interrogative pronoun introduces a question. Example What is the first event? Who is going to represent the team? Which of the books are you reading? • A relative pronoun introduces an adjective clause. Example Hary S. Truman, who became president when Franklin D. Roosevelt died, surprised many people with his victory over Thomas Dewey in 1948.
