Organ system • An organ system is a group of organs and tissue in an organism that works together to carryout some life function: • Digestive • Muscular • Skeletal • Respiratory • Nervous • Reproductive • Circulatory • Endocrine • immune
Disease • The improper function of an organ, tissue, or organ system that causes an organism harm, discomfort, disability, or death • May be caused by pathogens – bacteria, viruses, protist, fungal • Inherited through genes – sickle cell • Spontaneous mutation in genes – cancer • Self inflicted – cancer through smoking, type 2 diabetes • injury
Symptoms • Symptoms are the outward presentation of a disease. They are often what gives an organism discomfort, pain, or cripples. • Sickle cell – fatigue, pain • Diabetes – fatigue, numbness, dead tissue • HIV – chronic illness/ inability to fight off infections • Many STDS – sores • Flu – fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, headache, sorethroat • Bronchitis – hard cough, blood in phlegm, wheezing
Cure • A medicine or procedure that can do away with the cause of the disease for good • A medicine or procedure that can relieve the symptoms, or slow the progression or impact of the disease. Treatment
In class research and presentations on the human body system. The remainder of the week. Worth 50 class points and 50 project points. – Equivalent to a test grade • Tuesday and Wednesday we will work in groups of 3 to create a presentation on an organ system • Each group will have 1 organ system to become experts on, each member of the group will have one topic to research specifically. • Thursday and Friday each group will give a 10 minute presentation on their organ system and take questions
