Introduction to the Industrial Area • One of the main streets in the area is Piraios Street to the north, where the Industrial area is located • During the middle-war period most of the industries were established on Piraios Street • In the ’70s many industries have been moved close to the National Road • The re-use of the area Municipality of Tavros is already in process. Pivate companies and public authorities are involved. Bars, Clubs, trade centers, Malls and cultural centers are the main uses. Municipality of Tavros Piraios Str. Problems related to the Industrial Area • Bad image of the city • Provision of accommodation to homeless people • Pollution of urban environment • Development of an area vulnerable to fires • Difficulties in attracting new investors • Hard to monitor the process of revitalizing. Key aspects • Piraios Street is one of the oldest roots of Athens, used to connect the city of Athens with the port of Piraeus already from the ancient times • The industrial area is situated in the heart of the municipality. • The area is not limited to Tavros, but is extended also to the city of Athens • The plans for re-using the area started in the ’90s but the local community was not consulted ReTInA - Revitalisation of Traditional Industrial Areas
