  1. PROPAGANDA Techniques/OPTIC Analysis

  2. PROPAGANDA The use of a variety of communication techniques that create an emotional appeal to accept a particular belief or opinion, to adopt a certain behavior, or perform a particular action Not all persuasive material is propaganda Propaganda tends to have a negative connotation (applied to dishonest or skewed messages)

  3. Name Calling • Links a person or idea to a negative symbol • Examples: -Yuppie -Communist -Fascist

  4. Glittering Generalities • The use of “virtue words” (opposite of name calling) to link a person or idea to a positive symbol • Examples: -Democracy -Patriotism -Family

  5. Transfer • Links the authority of something well-respected to something the propagandist wants the audience to accept • Example: -A politician closes her speech with a prayer

  6. Testimonial • A public figure promotes or endorses a product, policy, or candidate • Examples: -An athlete appears on a cereal box -A celebrity speaks at a political rally

  7. Plain Folks • Attempt to convince an audience that a prominent person’s ideals are “of the people” • Examples: -A politician eating McDonald’s -An actress photographed shopping at a grocery store

  8. Bandwagon • Makes the appeal that “everyone else is doing it, and so should you” • Example: -”Everyone is rushing to the Ford dealer”

  9. Fear • Plays on deep-seated fears; warns the audience that disaster will result if they do not follow a particular course of action • Example: -An insurance company shows pictures of houses ruined by floods, followed up with an ad about Home Owner’s Insurance

  10. Logical Fallacies • Logic is manipulated deliberately to promote a cause; huge predictions about the future based on small facts • Example: -”All Communist governments regulate their power industries”
