PROPAGANDA The use of a variety of communication techniques that create an emotional appeal to accept a particular belief or opinion, to adopt a certain behavior, or perform a particular action Not all persuasive material is propaganda Propaganda tends to have a negative connotation (applied to dishonest or skewed messages)
Name Calling • Links a person or idea to a negative symbol • Examples: -Yuppie -Communist -Fascist
Glittering Generalities • The use of “virtue words” (opposite of name calling) to link a person or idea to a positive symbol • Examples: -Democracy -Patriotism -Family
Transfer • Links the authority of something well-respected to something the propagandist wants the audience to accept • Example: -A politician closes her speech with a prayer
Testimonial • A public figure promotes or endorses a product, policy, or candidate • Examples: -An athlete appears on a cereal box -A celebrity speaks at a political rally
Plain Folks • Attempt to convince an audience that a prominent person’s ideals are “of the people” • Examples: -A politician eating McDonald’s -An actress photographed shopping at a grocery store
Bandwagon • Makes the appeal that “everyone else is doing it, and so should you” • Example: -”Everyone is rushing to the Ford dealer”
Fear • Plays on deep-seated fears; warns the audience that disaster will result if they do not follow a particular course of action • Example: -An insurance company shows pictures of houses ruined by floods, followed up with an ad about Home Owner’s Insurance
Logical Fallacies • Logic is manipulated deliberately to promote a cause; huge predictions about the future based on small facts • Example: -”All Communist governments regulate their power industries”

OVERVIEW Describe what you see Write a sentence describing anything recognizable and its purpose in the visual Include information about the category (painting, photograph, poster, advertisement, etc) Time period, setting, anything else that’s occurring
PARTS Key in on all the parts by noting any details that seem important “Parts” can be anything: colors, figures, textures, scenery, groupings, shading, patterns, numbers, etc
TITLE/TEXT Use the title to clarify the subject of the image Consider both literal and metaphorical meanings What does the title suggest? Is there any text in the image?
INTERRELATIONSHIPS How are the parts related both to each other and to the image as a whole? Consider how the parts come together to create a mood, an idea, or an argument
CONCLUSION Write a conclusion paragraph about the image as a whole What might the artist, creator, designer, or photographer be trying to convey? What ideas or arguments is the image suggesting? What propaganda techniques is the creator using?
