  4. Osage County is situated in the northeastern corner of Oklahoma’s Indian Territory, which the Osage people were forced upon after their relocation from the east. The trauma of the rapid change and brutality of the non-native newcomers and their institutions generated massive changes in the Osage social, political and economic structures. • The trauma of the Osage people in Mean Spirit started when, in the early 1900s, each person was given an allotment according to their choice of any parcel that was not already claimed by the non-native settlers.

Obviously, the Osage should be right at home on their native lands, but they are not. • Many of the Hill Indians had decided to leave Watona and relocate to the hills outside of town in order to ensure continuance of their peaceful way of life. Many of the Hill Indians resolved to live their lives without the dominant white culture’s incursions, the Hill Indians represent traditional tribal ways in the novel.

  7. 2. The war of nationality about oil exploration matter • In this novel, the white people are killing members of their tribe, the Osage keep quiet in order to survive, which adds to the realization of how far into the human psyche self-censorship can reach. • Mean Spirit tells the tale of a small group of Osage Indians and how they are deceived, swindled, and murdered for their oil-rich lands. When the rich Indians living in Watona reconnect with the reclusive
