Jesus – the boy in the Temple 9th January 2017 Morning Worship Bishop Justus Church of England School
Gather The Lord be with you And also with you Let the light of Christ shine in our lives
Receive Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival. When the festival was ended and they started to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. Assuming that he was in the group of travellers, they went a day’s journey. Then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions… (continues on next slide)
Receive … And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, ‘Child, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety.’ He said to them, ‘Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?’ But they did not understand what he said to them. Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favour. From the Gospel according to Luke, chapter 2, verses 41 to 52
Engage Jesus’ early years as an infant, little child, teenager, and young adult are not recorded in the Gospels. The only glimpse that we have of young Jesus is recorded in the gospel of Luke when he was twelve years old. It is his visit to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover when he was 12 years of age. Jesus stays behind in Jerusalem and his parents look for him—on the third day they find him in the Temple with the Jewish teachers.
Engage Video suggestion … The boy Jesus in the temple https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=il9Z39tDhGE • Some discussion ideas … • Many great scientists and philosophers started their research with questions – what sort of questions might they have been? • How do you think Jesus surprised and intrigued the priests at the Temple? Activity suggestion … Play a question game e.g. “What am I”, a person thinks of an item and the class have to work out what it is by asking questions to which the answer can only be yes or no.
