Filling a Syringe • Put only a clean needle in a bottle (aseptic) • Pull plunger all the way out • Turn bottle upside down • Inject air into the bottle (prevents “suction pull”) • Draw liquid 1cc past the mark slowly • Remove needle from bottle • “Thump” air bubbles to top of syringe (no floaters) • Eject air
Subcutaneous Injections (SQ) • Bevel up • Barrel against skin • Pull skin up if possible • Insert needle to hub • Inject slowly to minimize tissue damage
Intramuscular Injections (IM) • Push in quickly • Aspirate – make sure you didn’t hit a vein • Inject quickly • Make sure plunger is all the way down before removing needle
