Single celled eukaryote (has a cell nucleus) that has some animal-like characteristics • Many move about and feed like animals • Most exist as a single cell and some live in groups called colonies • Are found in the kingdom Protista
Groups of protozoans Ciliates • Move by waving tiny, hair-like organelles called cilia • Ex. Paramecium • It waves its cilia like tiny oars to move through the water • Also uses cilia to sweep food into its gullet
Amoebas • Move by using pseudopods • Stretch its cytoplasm in the direction it will move • The stretched part becomes a pseudopod • The rest of the amoeba flows into the pseudopod • Also uses pseudopods to get food • Stretches out two pseudopods to surround a piece of food • The food is taken in to form a food vacuole
Flagellates • Move using a whip-like organelle called a flagella • Are a combination of plant and animal • Contain chlorophyll and can make their own food like a plant • Can also eat other things like an animal • Ex) euglena
Sporozoans • Do not have organelles for movement • Are parasites and live in the bodies of animals • An organism that lives in or on another animal (host) • Causes harm to their hosts • Ex) plasmodium which causes malaria • Transmitted by mosquitoes • When the mosquito bites, plasmodium gets into the blood and infects red blood cells • Infected blood cells eventually burst causing sickness and death
