Protozoans: Animal-Like Protists Unit 6 – Lecture 2
Protists – General Char. • most diverse of any kingdom • unicellular or multicellular • microscopic or macroscopic • heterotroph or autotroph • asexual or sexual reproduction • all are eukaryotic • most live in water
Protists – General Char. • divided into sub-sections: • animal-like protists: protozoans • plant-like protists [algae] • fungus-like protists • Some of the most harmful and beneficial orgs.
Protozoans • animal-like protists • unicellular • heterotrophic • mainly asexual reproduction
Protozoans • phyla are grouped by their method of movement • ciliophora • zoomastigina • pseudopods • sporozoa
Ciliophora • ciliates • sexual or asexual reproduction • almost all benign • ex: paramecium
Zoomastigina • flagellates • parasitic or beneficial • flagellate in termite gut • giardia • African sleeping sickness
Discuss • What is the term collectively for all animal-like protists? • How are all animal-like protists grouped? • Organisms which move using cilia are in the phylum…? • Organisms which use flagella to move are in the phylum…?
Pseudopods • phylum name: rhizopoda or sarcodina • shapeless, no cell wall • most live in salt water • asexual reproduction • ex: amoeba
Pseudopods • ingest food via phagocytosis • literally, cell eating • ingest water by pinocytosis • literally, cell drinking • causes amoebiasis – Montezuma’s Revenge – diarrhea, intense abdominal pain, dehydration white blood cells are NOT pseudopods – the image is to show phagocytosis.
Sporozoa • most produce spores • non-motile • almost ALL are harmful
Sporozoa • ex: P. falciparum – causes malaria – destroys blood cells, chills, fever, fatigue, death. • ex: Toxoplasmosis – harmless to most adults, but can cause infant blindness, mental retardation, other deformaties
Discuss • What are the four phyla of protozoans by their… • phylum names? • method of movement? • Which phylum of protozoans contains organisms which are almost ALL parasitic? • What are the two major functions of pseudopodia?
Odd Orgs Out: Euglenophyta • Euglena • not an animal-like protist, buthas animal- and plant- like characteristics • flagellum • animal-like – may take in food • plant-like – photosynthetic
Homework • complete the Amoeba Reading & Coloring w/s • color the letter titles individually[color inside of EACH letter, not over the letters]
