Overview • General Amide Information • Structure of an Amide • Naming Amides • Synthesis of Amides from Acid Chlorides • Amide Uses
Amides are the result from the replacement of the OH in –COOH with and –NH2 • Amides are polar and are soluble (they can mix with water) • Except for menthanamide • Most amides are solids at room temperature (melting points are high because amides can form hydrogen bonds) www.f.u-tokyo.ac.jp/~yakka/Figure-E1r.gif
Steps for making an amide structure • Molecule+COOH (carboxylic acid) • Remove the –OH • Move one bond to O, making a double bond attachment to the O • Add NH2 • Amides have a Planar structure
Steps for Naming Amides When dealing with a molecule: • Take name of parent chain • Remove the ending –e • Replace with –amide When dealing with an acid: • Take name acid • Remove the –oic ending • Replace with -amide
Amides are formed when ethanoyl chloride and ammonia react and a double replacement reaction occurs, producing ethanamide and solid ammonium chloride • This reaction involves a violent reaction, producing white smoke and heat along with a mixture of ethanamide and ammonium chloride Watch from the 3:08 minutes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-k08VVz0Vc
LSD • Amides have a wide variety of uses from peptides, which are used to break down proteins in your stomache, to LSD or lysergic acid diethylamide, the muse for The Beatles “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and literary works such as Alice in Wonderland. • Other used for amides include: • Acetominophen, a pain reliever • Caffeine • Deet, or bugspray www.lycaeum.org/diseyes/olo/lsd.gif
