  1. 12 October, 1492 Dearest Family, It has been a long trip on the Santa Maria. We have been traveling for over two months now and it has not been fun. Christopher Columbus has been working us hard. We finally saw land on 11 October, 1492. I was so happy when I saw land. I couldn’t wait until we got there. I haven’t seen anything but water for two months. We finally arrived at the island called Guanahani, when we got

  2. 12 October, 1492 off the Santa Maria we saw naked people with a little piece of gold hanging from their noses. We could not understand their language. We traded them little glass beads and hawks bells for parrots, spears, and balls of cotton thread. The island of Guanahani is an interesting place. It is ruled by a king. It’s a large island with many trees. It has a large lagoon in the middle of the island. I have enjoyed living here with the Tainos, they have taught me so much. Sincerely, Ailie
