  1. 12 October, 1492 Dear Family, I have been sailing since August 3rd. The ship that I sailed on isthe Nina, and my captain's name is Vincente Pinzon . We finally reached shore today on 12 October! The people here are naked, have no weapons except for small spears , and wear gold in a hole in their noses. I am so glad to reach shore since I've been on the boat for about seventy days. Columbus calls the people here Indians. They are not very smart. One of them grabbed one of our swords by the blade and cut his hand. We traded some things like little glass beads and hawk bells. They traded us parrots, balls of cotton, spears and other things. I hope to see you soon. From,Kyle C.
