Facts • Principal parts are the parts you need to know to form all of a verb’s tenses (time forms) • Note: some texts and dictionaries list as a fourth principal part from the presentparticiple, formed with – ing added to the present form: seeing and playing. It is regular, except for some minor spelling changes.
Important things to know • Regular verbs form their past tense and past participle by adding – ed to the present (with some minor spelling changes, as in stopped, cried). • Irregular verbs form from these parts in various ways, such as broken, thought, sung, made, swum.
Be, Have, Do • Remember that some irregular verbs so not form from past participle by adding ed. • Remember that irregular verbs be, have, and do can be used as main verbs or as helping verbs. • Ex. • I am at school. • I am taking my books home. • Use correct contractions for the verbs be, have , and do. • Ex. • Aren’t, haven’t, doesn’t
