Naval Oceanographic Office(NAVOCEANO) Changes in Multibeam Operations and Applications Presented by David H. Fabre
Outline • Past • MB History, Capability, Error Analysis, CRADAs, Training • Future • Justifiable cost for benefit • Attribution of Nav products • Mobile Training Team • Automation/Fusion • Open Questions (Non-hydro depts)
Past - NAVO Multibeam History • Multibeam in use since 1967 (SASS,Seabeam,Botas) • In early 1990s, EM100s on T-AGS 51s • EM950 on ORCAs • In 1996, USNS Pathfinder T-AGS 60, with EM950 and EM121a did first surveys • EM1002s replace EM950s • EM3000s replaced singlebeam on HSLs • Reson 8101s, 8125 used by HYCOOP & FST
Past - High Resolution Capability • Capability expanded with high resolution multibeams • Can now get “full coverage” (wrt singlebeam) that meets requirements with towed sidescan • Question: will MB coverage ever obviate sidescan?
Past - Error Analysis • Multiple methods of errors analysis • Backward • Ground truthing areas to build up confidence, beam statistics • Michaelson Test Area (MTA), “Testin’ in Destin”, Flower Garden Banks • Residual analysis on grid basis • Cross-check analysis for field sanity checks • Forward • Error Budgets for planning (Hare TPE methods) • Beam-wise 95% TPE confidence values in realtime and post-time
Past - Software CRADAs • To address the problem of “too much data” have software CRADAs • Based on PFM format • (Will eventually have GSF->PFM->BAG: collection->working->product formats) • Has increased throughput and saved resources • Still have problem of “not enough data” for most global product needs (< 10% of oceans surveyed)
Past - Training • Estimate 37% workforce formally trained (where the number used to be 1%) • NAVO was ~215/1345=16% of MBC attendees • Hydro currently 98% MBC-ized (of ~130) • Effect is decreased re-working, higher quality, lower costs • “good - fast - cheap”
Future - Justifiable cost for benefit • “Why do you need that multibeam?” • “What’s your ROI for that multibeam?” • “Is it worth having a very expensive multibeam?” • Questions we must constantly answer. Need for some quantifiable metrics … perhaps.
Future – Attribution of Nav products • Not just for nautical charting • Working on getting the answer to “How good is your data?” as part of the product • PFM_CUBE -> BAG -> “products” • ECDIS is not just depths anymore • Idea in “Chart of the future”
Future - Automation/Fusion • Have non-traditional sources of info. • Lidar, Derived Bathy, other Through-the-sensor data, random data • How do we fuse them together? • Can we make this automatic?
Mobile Training Team • NAVO’s HYCOOP provide formal customized on-the-job training to host countries • Potential opportunity for “Fab 4” or “Disciples” to provide assistance as expert consultants • POC – Stan Harvey
Open MIW/Engineering Questions • MIW Question: will multibeam ever be able to answer questions about clutter, roughness, and mine burial probability the way sidescan is used now? • Eng. Q: will it be possible to increase the repetition rate even for deeper sonars?
