The Benthic Zone Chapter 11 Oceans
What adaptations have organisms made to survive in the deepest, darkest parts of the ocean?
Adaptations • Extremely high pressure • No sunlight • Bioluminescence- create light through a chemical process (i.e. firefly in PA) • Large teeth, skulls, & stomachs
Bioluminescence • Find food • Attract prey • Defend against predators • Communication • Find mates
How does it work? • Luciferase enzyme reacts with the chemical luciferin • 3rd element present (depending on organism (i.e. ATP, calcium, etc) • Luciferin + Luciferase + Oxygen + Salt Light + Water
Other Adaptations • Pressure- 3000-9000 pounds/square inch! • No sunlight • Large teeth, skulls, & stomachs- scientists are still unsure of why organisms have these characteristics
Explain different adaptations organisms made to survive in the deepest, darkest parts of the ocean.
