Initial ideas for a music magazine • Kristina Doku
Task... For the main task of our Media coursework, we have to create the front page, contents and double-page spread of a new music magazine. We must include a minimum of four original images. This task will count as 50% of our final AS grade for Media Studies.
First idea... My first idea is an Indie music magazine aimed at older teenagers/young adults (16-25 year olds). I have not yet decided upon a name for the magazine but I have thought of several possibilities including: “Acoustic” “Camden Calling” “Cindie” As acoustic guitars are commonly used in Indie Music As Camden Town, London, is the heart of Indie Music As it rhymes with ‘indie’ and peoples’ names are often used for magazine titles Feature ideas could include an interview, day in the life or review of the featuring band/artist, an biography of an undiscovered band/artist, a diary entry from a festival go-er and a timeline of the indie music movement. The house style will be bright and illuminous as it represents the genre. Here are examples of existing indie magazines in which I can use as inspiration:
Second idea... My second idea is a rock music magazine aimed at teenagers with an interest in rock music. The name of the magazine will be “Teen Spirit” as this is a classic rock music anthem known by all rock fans. Also, it represents the target audience which are teenagers. Ideas for the main feature include a survival guide for the Reading or Leeds festival (as they are famous rock festivals), a timeline of how rock music through time and a calendar of upcoming rock music events (such as gigs). Here are examples of existing rock magazines in which I can use as inspiration: These magazines contain a ‘fierce’ feel which is something I aim to do.
third idea... My third and final idea is a pop music magazine aimed at 8-13 year old girls. Name ideas for this magazine include: “Bieber Fever” “Bubble Pop” As Justin Bieber is currently the most famous artist concerning young girls “Turn it up!” As this is a phrase relating to music the song title of a popular pop song and it will catch peoples’ attention As it is a pop magazine and bubbles associated with pops The feature of this magazine would either be an interview with the featuring band/artist, an shocking news story regarding the latest pop music heart throb (such as Justin Bieber) or an introduction to a new boy band or male artist. Here are examples of existing pop magazines in which I can use as inspiration:
Peer marking... First Person The first person I asked to peer mark my initial ideas chose my second idea, which was the rock music magazine. She mentioned the fact that she likes the name “Teen Spirit”. She also said that I should use the house style of the first magazine idea and apply it to this idea by using bright, illuminous colours to make it stand out and appeal to its audience. Second Person The second person I asked to peer mark my initial ideas chose my first idea, which was the indie music magazine. She came up with the suggestion that I use the first name idea “Camden Calling” for the reason I stated. Verdict As my peers suggested different ideas, I am going to create a combination of both. The name for the magazine will be “Camden Calling”, the house style will be bright and illuminous and the target audience will be 15-21 year olds as it will include young adults and a majority of teenagers. Another aspect I will have to consider is combining the two music genres: rock and indie. Therefore, I will include bands and artists from both genres in the magazine. I admire the idea of strange, creative photography of the indie genre and the ‘fierce’ feel of rock magazines so I will attempt to produce images containing both features.
