What is PAT? • It is a piece of computer software released by the DfES in 2003 and updated several times since then. • It is designed to contain pupil contextual data, and attainment and achievement data for your school. • It allows schools to analyse whole-cohort and individual-pupil performance. • It also provides the facility to investigate question and topic level performance within statutory and optional tests. • Data can be used from KS2, KS3, GCSE/GNVQ and optional SATs for Years 7 and 8; there is no facility for 6th form data (yet?).

What data can you use in PAT? • Data can be stored in PAT for multiple years, depending on what the school has available for use • Recent and current data are available from the Key to Success website • Other data can be imported from your school’s MIS – not always straightforward • PAT provides the national data for comparison analysis • Data used are mainly similar to those available in the Autumn Package and PANDA reports

How good do schools need to be at using ICT resources? • You will need to be able to: • access websites on the internet • download files from websites • follow ‘wizard’ type instructions • The PAT package itself is easy to work with and create materials from • If you can use Excel-type spreadsheets you will be able to add more to your use of PAT, but this is not essential

  5. Website information from the DfES • There is a dedicated section of the DfES Standards website for PAT. This is found at http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/performance/pat/ • As PAT becomes more developed new versions are released through this site. The current version is numbered 4.1.4 • (We are expecting a further upgrade with optional SATs during May). • Ensure that you use the school version of PAT rather than the LEA version.

  6. How do I get started? • You will need to have Administrator or Power-User rights, particularly if the computer you use is part of a network. If you get a message about this, do not ignore it – you will not be able to install PAT • Go to the PAT page on the DfES Standards website. You need to choose from: • Full PAT download • PAT upgrade • The PAT file is large so choose your time carefully. • Double click the downloaded file and follow the instructions. You will then have the newest version of PAT (4.1.4) to work with.

Getting started • When you first use PAT you need to log on with: • User name: admin • Password: autumn • You are advised to change these once you have your school data loaded into PAT, to ensure security and confidentiality. • You will then need to load some data into PAT. This is best achieved by downloading from the DfES Key to Success website. • You need to check that the data in PAT is correct, as it is not linked to your own MIS.

  12. Obtaining historical data • Go to the website at www.keytosuccess.dfes.gov.uk • Choose the school log-in page. • Use your s2s website username and password to log in to the site. Select “PAT Downloads” at top right. • Right click and select “Save target as…” to download and save (somewhere safe!) each file except: 2005_KS4_data_for_PAT.xml • The KS3 and KS4 data will also have matched results for those pupils from the previous key stage. • If you cannot locate your s2s passwords, please ring Neil Hill at R&D on 0115 977 4539.

Question-level data • The DfES is making KS3 English data for schools available at question / topic level. • Available via the ‘question level’ link on the PAT downloads page on K2S • Some KS2 data is available through the R & D question-level analysis project • The data are contained in ‘.csv’ files that can be imported into PAT through the main Import / Edit Data screen. Remember to import these as Question Level data. • The data are provided in separate files for each test paper. They provide a detailed breakdown of pupils’ performance in the tests.

Getting your data into PAT • Your data from the websites will have been stored as CTF ‘.xml’ format files or as ‘.csv’ files. • The import menu allows both pupil and question data to be brought into PAT • Generally, pupil-level data will be in ‘.xml’ format and question-level data in ‘.csv’ format. • Select the appropriate option to take you to a ‘wizard’. Choose the options appropriate to whether you wish to import data from a ‘.xml’ or a ‘.csv’ file. • A browser box will appear and you now need to locate one of the files which you have saved. • After this the wizard loads the data into PAT for you. • Repeat for each data file. • IMPORTANT!! When you have completed your data import, use the ‘Calculate School Results’ option in PAT to produce the summary data for your pupils.

Getting help with using PAT: 1 • PAT is an intuitive piece of software, but you will probably need to look at some guidance about how to use PAT. • Use the Tutorial option within PAT which has very detailed guidance for specified users. • Use the Help button within PAT to obtain specific guidance. • Download the Tutorials or Powerpoint presentations from the DfES Standards site; these cover similar material.
