  3. Lesson One Christmas Day in the Morning(I) • About Christmas • The author • words and phrases • figures of speech

  4. Christmas is a time for giving presents to friends, family, and poor people. Churches, businesses, and other groups give money, food, and toys to needy families. Many people buy trees and decorate them with electric lights and ornaments. Children believe a fat, jolly man named Santa Claus brings gifts on Christmas Eve. During the weeks before Christmas, parents bring their children to see Santa. Many stores have a Santa Claus for children toe visit. On Christmas morning, children look under the tree and in their stockings for gifts from Santa Claus. Many people go to church on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. They sing joyful songs, Christmas carols. On Christmas Day, families open gifts and eat a holiday dinner together.

  6. Words and Phrases • cling to: stay with • trim: make neat and tidy by cutting • a light sleeper: a person who wakes easily • overhear: hear by chances • brisk: sharp and quick • loiter: to move or go about business slowly and with many stops

  7. Metaphor: The substitution of one thing for another, or the identification of two things from different ranges of thought. Examples: 1. Boys and girls, tumbling in the streets and playing, were moving jewels. 2. The town was stormed after a long siege. 3. Snow clothes the ground. Examplefrom this lesson: He slipped back in time.

  8. Group Work • Questions for Discussion: • Why did Rob always wake up at four o’clock in the morning when he was old? Why didn’t he go back to sleep on that particular morning? • What did Rob overhear about fifty years ago which had made Rob realize that his father loved him? • What effect did the knowledge have upon Rob as a boy?
