Chapter 14 vocabulary • Consuls – two heads of Roman republic government. They were administrators and military leaders. • Veto – to say “no” to. • Tribunes – government officials who protected the rights of Plebians.
Chapter 14 vocabulary • Legions – groups of 5,000 soldiers that was smaller and moved faster than the phalanx. • Legionnaires – members of the Roman legion.
Punic Wars – A series of three wars fought between Rome and Carthage during the years 264 to 146 B.C. • Latifundias – large estates in Rome that replaced small farms.
Publicans – Roman tax collectors hired by the government to collect taxes from people they conquered.
