Back to School *I am so happy to welcome you to the Eagle’s Nest! *This year will be full of fun, of challenges, and of learning.
Richness in Diversity *Here at English Landing we want to preserve, encourage, and celebrate diversity. *We teach and support the acquisition of English so your student can fulfill his or her potential.
Our Instruction *Students focus on improving their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. *This year students will receive instruction and support in their regular classroom. *I will work collaboratively with the classroom teachers to help provide an enriched learning environment.
English Language Proficiency Standards The state of Missouri belongs to the WIDA consortium – a group of 36 states that share common standards and assessments. The WIDA Consortium’s English Language Proficiency standards for ELLs include: • Social and Instructional Language • The Language of Language Arts • The Language of Mathematics • The Language of Science • The Language of Social Studies
Students are assessed every year with a test called ACCESS. This tests the student’s listening comprehension, speaking ability, reading, and writing skills. The parents receive a report like the one below that shows the progress the student has made.
Some common ACRONYMS are: *ELL English Language Learner *ESL English as a Second Language *L1 First Language *L2 Second Language *LEP Limited English Proficient *WIDA World Class Instructional Design and Assessment *W-APT WIDA Placement Test *ACCESS State Mandated Test
Some factors that will determine how quickly a student learns another language are: • *Similarity of L1 to L2 • *Proficiency and/or literacy in L1 Language • *Prior schooling • *Motivation • *PARENTAL EXPECTATIONS • *Parental Support • *Ability • *Other affective factors, such as confidence, personality, peer support or ridicule, etc.
What you can do at home to help your child: *Speak with your child. Have discussions. *Share Experiences. *Read to them and with them. Talk about the things you read. *Use books with CD’s *Share your expectations with your child and show your support.
You can do it! It’s important & it’s worth it! *To become proficient in another language takes time, patience and a lot of conscious effort.
