Answer the following questions… • When you think of Africa what words, images or phrases first come to mind? • Where does your information about Africa come from?
CHAPTER 1 Notes • 53 separate nations • Over 800 million inhabitants • Nearly 1000 spoken languages
Climate • Africa includes 4 distinct climate zones • The first is a mild climate zone across the northern coast and the southern tip. It has moderate rainfall, warm temperatures and fertile land. It can support large populations.
Deserts form another climate zone. The cover 40% of Africa. The Sahara in the north (which is the largest desert in the world) and the Kalahari in the south. • A third climate zone is the rainforest. This covers 10% of the continent. It has heavy rains and warm temperatures. The rainforest is home to the tsetse fly, which infects both animals and humans with the sleeping sickness.
The final climate zone is the Savannas, which are broad grasslands dotted with trees and shrubs, they exist north and south of the rainforests and cover 40% of the land mass. EXAMPLE: Lion King
Emerging Societies • Around 7 or 8 thousand years ago, hunters and gathers in Africa began to tame animals and grow crops. The mastery of farming, called the Agricultural Revolution, gave rise to the first civilizations; Kush and Axum.
Kush became a farming and trading state. They used iron for weapons and tools. They traded iron, ivory, gold, ebony and slaves to the Roman Empire, Arabia, and India. • Axum is located in what is now Ethiopia. It was founded by the Arabs and combined Arab and African Cultures. Axum owed its prosperity to its location along the Red Sea, on the trade route between India and the Mediterranean. Axum exported ivory, frankincense, myrrh, and slaves.
Rise of Islam- Islam spread from the Arabian Peninsula into Egypt. Muslim states occupied parts of north Africa and traded with Axum leading to a spread of culture.
