Interests • The Travel channel rated the Sunshine Skyway bridge as number 3 in its special “10 Top Bridges” in the world. • Because of its height above the Emerald-green Gulf Waters, length of continuous travel, location in a warm weather state, and modern architectural design, it is a popular spot for filming automobile commercials.
The Original Sunshine Skyway Bridge was built in 1950 and was completed in 1954. • The Original bridge was damaged by a large freight ship in 1980, the bridge was later than removed. • The new Sunshine Skyway Bridge was built in 1982 but was completed in 1987.
The Sunshine Skyway bridge was built in St. Petersburg and Bradenton Florida. • The Sunshine skyway is a cable-stayed bridge that only not carry interstate 275 but it multiplexes with US 19 from exit 1 (54 avenue south) to exit 5(us 19 south). • The Sunshine skyway costs $244 million to be completed.
Approximately 1,000,000 cars uses the Sunshine Skyway bridge per week. That is more than 52 million per year. • It is the world’s longest cable-stayed concrete bridge, its cables are painted a bright taxicab yellow. • It is considered the ‘’flag bridge” of Florida
The US Senator who presided over its design and most of its construction was inspired to suggest the current design by a visit to France where he saw a similar cable-stayed bridge
Interesting Facts • Most bridge wires are attached to the side for support, but the Sunshine Skyway bridge cables attach to the center of the bridge instead of the outer part. • During rush hour traffic in the early morning of February 23, 2003 a man tried to commit suicide. He was 50 feet above the roadway standing on top of the center span bridge support cable. It was Trooper Kristi Menzies who talked the person to coming down.
