  2. The Future of Fraternalism In the immortal words of Alfred E. Neuman… “Mr. Fraternal”

  3. “Fraternal” -- What’s In A Word? • Turns out, plenty… • Webster: Of or relating to brothers, exhibiting comradeship, of or being a fraternity • Roget’sThesaurus: No mention • Wikipedia: Fraternal organization • an organized society of men associated together in an environment of companionship and brotherhood BUST!!

  4. “Fraternal” -- What’s In A Word? • No word seems to denote dignity, faith, good works and camaraderie better than “fraternal” • Unfortunately, that word is pretty close to “fraternity” • And the concept most closely associated with “fraternity” in America today? • Frankly, Otter and Bluto said it best…Mr. Blutarsky? • Sadly, TOGA seems like a weak business strategy…

  5. Fraternal Challenges • Membership reducing • “Lodge” concept – are you kiddin’ me? • Maturing of members • Challenging economic times • Unprecedented generational changes – more rapidly and compactly than ever before

  6. Fraternal Challenges • Regulatory activism and changes • Some fraternals’ dubious behaviors • Consumer protectionism • Governance model outmoded • Talent squeeze • What about the member? • Not the current ones, stupid, the new ones!!

  7. Fraternal – The George Carlin Lessons Putting off change is, in fact, a decision….and you better believe it! The seven words you can’t say on TV But we’ve always done it that way

  8. OMG!! This Is Hopeless • But wait – there is hope!! • Changing is why we’re here • Chapter of the Future • Gen X, Y and Z - 131 million and growing • Saturday at our Annual Meeting • Online Tracking • New Products & Services

  9. Fraternalism: An Alternative View • Many healthy societies • More aggregate assets and surplus than ever • Improving governance • Outward looking vs. inward looking • Some merging of weak societies • Experienced executives from within, and without, the fraternal system • We’re here because we care

  10. Fraternalism: An Alternative View • More and better tools at our disposal • We should be nimble • Respect our past but embrace our future! • How many fraternals does it take to truly change what we do? • Only one, but it has to want to change • TRICK QUESTION!! • All of us!

  11. Fraternalism: An Alternative View • We are not competitors as much as we are professionals interested in making our industry the best it can be • More and better tools to learn, understand and grow – go ahead, be a risk-taker! • Passionate leaders • Great trade organization – seriously!!

  12. The American Fraternal Alliance • Professional Staff dedicated to our craft • Exists to help all of us • Resource-oriented, results-driven • Member controlled • Strong governance • Wait a minute – that sounds a lot like us!

  13. Fraternal Challenges Crisis or Crossroads? You Decide!
