Advantages of (text-based) Virtual Teams • Connects geographically dispersed team members • Less expensive, faster than transporting team members to the same location • Comfortable platform for introverted team members – and non-native speakers (of a given language)
Disadvantages of (text-based) Virtual Teams • No initial face-to-face (no ‘handshake’, coffee, shared meal, etc – note: cultural variations – e.g. Italy, Japan) • Nonverbal behaviors are unavailable (vocalics, gestures, tone of voice) • Challenge with developing trust (Jarvenpaa & Leidner, 1999) – must rely on swift trust (Meyerson, Weick, & Kramer, 1996) – interacting with ‘roles’ rather than ‘people’
