Outline for Today Introductions Mission You’ll Love/You’ll Hate Academics—quick overview and schedule Dress Code Code of Conduct, Discipline, Rules Transportation and Uniforms LACS Parent Programming Questions and Answers
16 years of experience in education Over 10 years of experience with middle schoolers Helped to create over 30 urban charter schools BA, U. Pennsylvania (magna cum laude), MBA, MIT Chris Clemons, Founder and Principal
The LACS staff is exceptionally well qualified to do this work • Average over five years of experience • 50% of LACS staff hold advanced degrees • 82% are from Teach for America
Latin Academy exists for only one reason… To send every scholar to college.
Why College? • Choice—people who attend college can make broad choices about their lives. • Money—a person with a bachelor’s degree on average earns almost $1 million more than someone without one. • Accomplishment—graduating college is hard and achieving it builds confidence and creates new potential.
Facility • Not ideal, but we make it work • Building is code compliant, safe and secure • Working very hard on relocating to Capital View Elementary School • Could happen as soon as January 2014
This is NOT your old school…This is NOT your old school…This is NOT your old school…
The Latin Way • Team and Family—we are all in this together, therefore, we must all work together. Keep those lines of communication open! • Latin Shine—Politeness matters here! We say yes ma’am and no sir, we use our PETSYs, and inside our walls we treat each other with respect. To be part of this community, you must commit to being nice. You deserve it. I deserve it. This entire community deserves it!
You Will Love That… • We mean what we say—we keep appointments and follow through at all times • We are strict—this environment will be safe for everyone • We are committed—we will never give up on your child—we will do whatever it takes to ensure he or she succeeds and will not accept excuses for failure
You Will Hate That… • We mean what we say—if you miss important appointments after being given proper notice, we will not have sympathy • We are strict—if your child doesn’t follow the rules, we will give them a consequence every time • We are committed—we don’t apologize for giving 1.5 hours of homework or having school in the summer or having high standards
We do the little things that turn into big success • We have school more days than APS. This means that there will be days when APS is out that LACS is in • We have a longer school day • We have homework over extended vacations • Students experience a consequence for taking time off from learning. If they decide to use the restroom outside of the hour total they have each day to use it, they will use paycheck money (every 90 minutes LACS scholars may use the restroom for free)
LACS 6th Grade Classes • English/Language Arts • Mathematics • Science • Social Studies • Latin • PE • Art • Ethics • Study Skills
Can you think of a model of class, excellence, and professionalism?

The Griffin Hey Latin… We in the front… We in the back… We’re too smart… And that’s a fact… Latin Life… That’s where it’s at!
LACS is very strict • Our rules are generally simple, but we enforce them relentlessly • Our structure is the foundation of our performance • The Latin Rules: • Honesty—Tell the truth • Respect—Yourself and others • Responsibility—Be accountable for what you do • Determination—Don’t quit
Detention • Detention is a punitive (meant to punish) measure taken to correct negative behavior • It can involve writing reflection, writing apology letters, rote copying, or other service to the Academy • If you would like, we will notify you by phone immediately if your child has earned detention • Detention can be assigned directly or can be earned by losing paycheck dollars
Restriction • Restriction is a more serious punishment that involves daily detention, silent reflective lunch, exclusion from Friday activities • If restriction is not effective, suspension and expulsion will be pursued
The Latin Lounge • LACS offers its best behaving students the opportunity to access the Latin Lounge during lunch. The top 8-12 students in running paycheck average are able to eat in the lounge, play xbox, eat special lunch, and generally enjoy the benefits of being a good Latin Scholar.
