BASIC CONCEPTS OS (OperatingSystem) The set of computer programs that allow the user to perform basic tasks like copying, moving, saving and printing files. It provides a communication btw application programs & computer hardware. interface Applicationsprograms (end-userprograms) E.g.:Wordprocessors,database programs or spreadsheets computer software designed to help the user to perform singular or multiple related specific tasks
What is the working principle of applications programs? What happens when a user interacts with an applications program in the screen? The aplication program communicates with the operating system and the operating system communicates with the computer hardware.
BASIC CONCEPTS vs Non-resident programs Resident programs Programs that remain in memory while the computer is in use Programs that stay in memory only while they are being used Calculators,calendars Internet explorer, multimedia programs etc.
BASIC CONCEPTS Command driven (OS) The user runs a program by typing a command The screen is usually blank except for a symbol (e.g.$) which acts as a command prompt.When the command is typed at the prompt and the Enter key is pressed, the command is processed and the output is displayed on the screen. How does it work?

invoke (v):To activate or start (a program) Eg: You need to invoke yahoo messenger before starting to chat. • resident (n):programs that remain in memory while the computer is in use • non-resident (n.):programs that only stay in memory while they are being used • software interface (n. phr.):a software program enabling a user to communicate with a computer
