Daily warm-up

Engage in a practical speed measurement activity outside the school to analyze car speeds, calculate averages, and enhance awareness of road safety. Working in teams, record data, calculate speeds, compare car colors, and present findings to the class.

  1. Daily warm-up • 1) It is 210 km from Dunedin to Invercargill. If Kauri drove at an average of 83 km/h, how long would it take him to get there? • 2) It took Anaru 53.2 seconds to run a 400m race. What was his average pace in m/s? • 3) Kaia swims at an average pace of 0.8 m/s. How far can she swim in 10 minutes?

  2. Daily warm-up answers • 1) Kauri: 2hr 32min • 2) Anaru: 7.52m/s • 3) Kaia: 480m

  3. PLAN FOR TODAYSPEED • Outside lab calculating the average speed of cars driving past the school • Dress for the weather • Represent your school • Street safety • We are only measuring speed, NOT rapid deceleration or collisions!!!

  4. Directions • Work in teams of 3 • Measure out a distance between 10m and 100m • Time how long it takes a car to cover that distance • You may use two different distances if you want to compare. • Measure the speed of at least 10 cars • 5 at each distance if you are using two distances • Note the colour of every car (red, blue, etc.) • Record all of your data in a table.

  5. Example Table • Calculate average speed in m/s and km/h • Come up with an overall average speed for all cars • Select two colours where you have the most cars and compare them to the average

  6. Compare Car Colours • Select two colours and compare them to the average • Represent this comparison in a chart • Present your findings to the class
