New Testament Eldership Part 5 The Work of Elders
Teach (Feed) the Church • “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6a). • “Ah, shepherds of Israel who have been feeding yourselves! Should not shepherds feed the sheep?” (Ezek. 34:2b). • “And I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding” (Jer. 3:15).
Teach (Feed) the Church • He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it. For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers … (Titus 1:9-10).
Protect from False Teachers • “Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be on the alert, remembering that night and day for a period of three years I did not cease to admonish each one with tears.” (Ac 20:28–31)
Protect from False Teachers • He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it. For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers (Titus 1:9-10).
Protect from False Teachers • For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families, teaching things they should not teach for the sake of sordid gain. One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” This testimony is true. For this reason reprove them severely so that they may be sound in the faith… (Titus 1:10–13)
Protect from False Teachers • What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is not the source your pleasures that wage war in your members? You lust and do not have; so you commit murder. You are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel. (Jas 4:1-2)
Leading the Church • Greek: prohistemi – “rule, govern” • The elders who rule well are to be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching. (1 Ti 5:17)
Leading the Church • But we request of you, brethren, that you appreciate those who diligently labor among you, and have charge over you in the Lord and give you instruction… (1 Th 5:12)
Leading the Church • The one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal [diligence]. (Rom 12:8)
Caring Practical Needs • “You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my own needs and to the men who were with me. “In everything I showed you that by working hard in this manner you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” (Ac 20:34–35)
Caring Practical Needs • Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him. (Jas 5:14–15)
And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified (Acts 20:32).
