  1. The IGCP 565 Project Follow-On: The Next Five Years Norman Miller Department of Geography, University of California, Berkeley Earth Sciences Division, Berkeley National Laboratory IGCP 565 Workshop Johannesburg, South Africa 29 October 2012

  2. IGCP 565 Project Objectives for 2008-2013 • Explore and develop components of the Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) into a Monitoring System for Regional Hydrologic Cycle. • Combine GPS and GRACE observations to improve geodetic modeling. • Prepare geodetic products for assimilation into hydrologic models. • Hold annual workshops, tutorials, and provide geodetic products that are useful to water resource managers.

  3. Science Issues • Develop an integrated dynamic model for predicting daily to interannual geodetic signals. • Develop inversion algorithms for combined geodetic observations for surface mass changes. • Develop an integrated assimilation of observed surface mass change within land surface hydrologic models. • Develop products relevant for regional water management.

  4. Accomplishments to Date • Five Annual Workshops • Numerous Peer Reviewed Publications • Gravity and groundwater well observation data assimilation Pilot study in California.

  5. Next Steps: Hydrology • Capacity Building • Bridging Spatial Scales • Hydrogeodesy

  6. Capacity Building • California Water Resource Modeling needs to improve groundwater variations. • African Nations need Technology Transfer • Education training workshops

  7. Large‐Scale to Local Monitoring • Combination of direct and indirect measurements are needed. • Inversion techniques for deriving water storage variations based on GPS and InSAR. • Spatial gap filling. • Data assimilation at high‐resolution

  8. Continue Dialogue • Hydrologists and Meteorologists formed the interdisciplinary field, hydrometeorology • We need to form the interdisciplinary field of hydrogeodesy. Why are we not entraining more participants.

  9. The 2013-2018 Follow on Plan • Prepare and submit IGCP Proposal in 2013. • Focus more narrowly on a watershed in Africa with support from ongoing projects. • Advance California the assimilation work as a technology transfer to Africa.
