  2. #1. Why did the United States need to expand overseas markets? (page 209) •  The United States needed to expand overseas markets because population was growing to sell the surplus of crops.

  3. #2. Explain what the “reexport trade” was. (Hint – it was dealing with the United States and France) (pages 209-210) • Britain banned direct American voyages between the French West Indies and France; so, the United States exported from French West Indies to America, then reexport back from United States to France

  4. 3. List the two reasons why Britain hated the “reexport trade.” (page 210) • 1st Reason: it helped the French economy which sustained Napoleon’s army • 2nd Reason: the mew trade helped the United States become Britain’s greatest commercial competitor.

  5. 4. What did British merchants do to American shippers in 1805? (page 210) •  British warships began to stop and confiscate growing numbers of American merchant ships from trading with the French.

Summarize, “Facing British Impressment,” pages 210-211. • The British navy also angered the United States by relying on impressment, or taking American sailors and forcing them to serve in the British navy. • Why? British desperately needed sailors for their huge fleet; and, anyone born in the British empire was a British subject for life

  7. 6. What is an embargo, AND why did Thomas Jefferson want an embargo? (p.211) • Embargo – suspending trade by ordering American ships to stay in port. • He expected the embargo to starve the British and close their factories, creating riots in the streets

  8. #6 CONTINUED • The embargo didn’t work because it bankrupted American merchants, American sailors out of work, and hurt farmers, who could no longer export their crops. • Britain found other markets in South America so the embargo didn’t achieve its goal.

  10. 7B. Why did the War Hawks push for war with Britain? (215) • The War Hawks pushed for war with Britain to restore national honor, invading British-held Canada would deprive the Indians of their main source of arms and drive the British out of North America.

As a result of various defeats of Native Americans in the South, millions of acres of land opened American settlement. • Overall, the War of 1812 forced many Native Americans to give up their land to America
