War of 1812 • British interference with American shipping and western expansionism fueled the call for a declaration of war. • Federalists opposed Madison’s war resolution, talked of secession, and proposed constitutional amendments, which were not acted upon.
Manifest Destiny • Idea of many Americans that God wanted America to be a large country that stretched from the East Coast to the West Coast
Tariffs • A tax placed on a good imported into the country. • Protects factories from foreign competition.
Imports vs. Exports • Goods the US buys from other countries • Goods that the US sells to other countries
sectionalism • Loyalty to region (North or South) over loyalty to the United States as a whole
Federalism • Thee system of government set up by the Constitution where the national government is supreme over the states but states have a lot of leeway to govern themselves
States’ Rights • The idea that state governments should have more power than the federal government
Nullification Crisis • South Carolina refused to follow the Tariff of 1832. Andrew Jackson threatened South Carolina with military action if the state didn’t follow the federal law.
Abolitionists • People opposed to slavery (often for religious reasons) who worked to abolish slavery
Suffrage • The right to vote. Women worked for the right to vote before and after the Civil War and were enfranchised by the 19th Amendment.
Civil War Amendments • 13th Amendment abolished slavery • 14th Amendment prohibited states from denying anyone equal rights • 15th Amendment enfranchised all men (right to vote for African-American men)
Reconstruction • Time from 1861-1877 after the Civil War when the South was rebuilt.
