Eastern European countries, who had been communist, began to hold free and open elections • The symbolic end of the Cold War came in 1989 with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the ensuing collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991
Persian Gulf War • In 1990 the country of Iraq led by Saddam Hussein invaded the country of Kuwait • The United States led a United Nations authorized coalition force of 34 nations to expel Iraqi forces from Kuwait
Desert Storm • The Persian Gulf War, codenamed Operation Desert Storm, was won decisively by the U.N. forces lasting only 6 weeks • Iraq was forced out of Kuwait but Saddam Hussein was left in power
Balkans Crisis of the 1990’s • At the end of the Cold War the communist country of Yugoslavia disintegrated in the Yugoslav wars • These series of wars in the 1990’s would reshape the boundaries and create disputes between newly created countries
Bosnian War • In order to stabilize the region, the United Nations sent peace keeping forces to Bosnia and Herzegovina • The United States participated by providing air and naval support to help enforce the Dayton Peace Accords
9/11 • Terrorist attack by al-Qaeda against the United States in 2001 • The attack destroyed the World Trade Center towers and plunged the United States into the war on terror • Department for Homeland Security created after 9/11
USA Patriot Act • The purpose of this Act is to deter and punish terrorist acts in the United States and around the world • The act is seen as controversial by some as it infringes on privacy
War on Terror • U.S. led war that started as a result of the 9/11 terrorist attacks • The goals are to defeat terrorists such as Osama bin Laden, defeat terrorist organizations, and defend U.S. citizens and interests at home and abroad
