How can we tell that something is living? • We can tell if something is living or not by looking at its characteristics. Characteristics are the features or qualities of that thing.
Revision: What are the characteristics of living things? • Take in and use energy (nutrition) • Take in and use gas from air or water in which they live (respiration) • Produce wastes (excretion) • Respond to stimuli in their environment • Move • Reproduce- which means to make new individuals that are similar to themselves. There are two types of reproduction, sexual (requires two parents to reproduce) and asexual (only requires one parent to reproduce) • Grow

What is the name of this living thing? Answer: Human. The scientific name is homo sapiens
Why homo sapiens? • Scientists use a system known as ‘classification’ to distinguish between living things. Homo Sapiens was the name given to humans when we use this system. • We classify things by putting them into groups. • Taxonomy is the practice or act or grouping things • The largest groups are called kingdoms.

The classification system What is a species? A species is a group of things that can reproduce and create young that can also reproduce. Being able to reproduce is called being fertile How do we name species? We name species using the binomial system. Each species is given a binomial name with 2 parts. The first part of the scientific name is the genus and is always spelt with a capital. The second part is the specific grouping of the species and is spelt with a lower case letter
