2. “When a man of real piety sees the ideas which he venerates ignored, objects which he believes to be holy scorned, he burns with a righteous indignation which no mean motive of personal ambition or revenge can kindle. The strength of his conviction carries with it not only a presage of victory, based on the belief that God will defend the right, but also the martyr’s contempt of death in a righteous cause.

3. It is thus that there is no adversary so formidable as a man sure he is fighting the battle of the Lord of Hosts, no antagonist so relentless in pursuing opponents as he who is convinced that it is his duty to make them an acceptable sacrifice to his God.

4. “At first sight this intolerance seems to be a noble and fair flower springing from the cultivation of all that is best in the human heart. Of course even men filled with such fire admit that the zeal for persecution is dangerous: all recognize that the love of battle and a joy in destruction are among the lower passions of mankind, and inferior men animated by such passions are usually the instruments by which the righteous secure the conquest of evil.

5. Apart from all ethical considerations the verdict of history condemns intolerance as both stupid and criminal. Persecution in however mild a form is usually both a mistake and a crime. It is a mistake because it so rarely succeeds: it is a crime because in the name of virtue you unchain the baser passions of mankind. The success of intolerance is always momentary; its ultimate failure remains to hamper and distress those who inherit the legacy which it bequeaths.”

"يتوقد التقي بغضب الصالحين حين يرى الآخرين يتجاهلون أفكاره التي يوقر ويحتقرون أغراضة التي يعتقد أنها مقدسة، غضب لا يمكن أن يوقده دافع دنيء من طموح أو إنتقام شخصي. ولا يأتي مع معتقده القوي مجرد النبوءة بالظفر، معتمدا على أن الله سيدافع عن الحق، بل يصحبه تحقير الشهيد للموت في سبيل قضية محقة. وهكذا لا تجد خصما أعند من رجل متأكد أنه يقاتل (يخوض) معركة رب الجنود، ولن تجد عدوا أصلب في طلب (مطاردة) خصومه من الذي اقتنع ان عليه (من واجبه) تقديمهم قربانا يتقبله إلاهه. التعصب

"يبدوا التعصب للوهلة الأولى زهرة نبيلة ومنصفه تنبت في تربة كل ما هو فاضل في قلب البشر. والواقع أنه حتى أولئك الذين تجيش قلوبهم بهاتيك النار يقرون بأن التحمس للاضطهاد (أمر) خطير: الكل يقر بأن حب المعارك والفرح بالتدمير من أدني المشاعر الإنسانية، وأن الدون من الرجال المدفوعين بتلك المشاعر عادة ما يكونون أدوات في أيدي الصالحين لدحر الشر / لغزو الباطل. دع جانبا كل الاعتبارات الاخلاقية، تجد حكم التاريخ يصم التعصب بالحماقة والاجرام. فمهما اعتدلت صورة الاضطهاد فلا يزيد عادة عن كونه خطأ وجريمة. هو خطأ لآنه قلما يحقق المراد : وهوجريمة لأنه باسم الفضيلة يطلق العنان للمشاعر الدنيئة في الانسان. فنجاح التعصب أمر وقتي على الدوام، ويبقى فشلة المطلق قيدا وتعاسة لمن يرثون تبعاته."
