2. Sedimentation • Sedimentation is a separating technique That separates insoluble substances and soluble substances • This is an example of sedimentation, put a mix of chalk and water in a glass and then stir, when you have stirred it for about 10 seconds leave the glass and don’t touch it for about 15 minutes. • The liquid inside of the glass will settle and the chalk will sink to the bottom of the glass, then you can pour out all of the water and you will have a white creamy liquid

3. Magnetism • Magnetism is when you separate a mixture using magnetism • An example of this is if you have nails and sand and you want to separate these you could use a magnet to attract the nails and the collect them.

4. Flotation • Flotation is when you separate substances by putting them in or on water • An example of this is when you put oil on water, the oil will float to the top because it is lighter that the water

Chromatography • Chromatography is when you separate a substance by adding a solvent to it • An example of this is when you put two different pen inks on two pieces of paper and then dip them into water • One pen ink could be mixed and you could see that because there are two coloursthat you can see on the paper but if the ink was pure you would see one colour of ink

6. adsorption • Adsorption is when you separate substances with another material • An example is to separate sand from water, you can use a sponge to take out the water while the sand stay’s there

7. Electrostatics • Electrostatic separation is when you separate mixture using static energy • An example of this is when you have just cut your dogs hair and you think that there is still hair on the dogs body you can rub a balloon on the dog and the hairs that are cut off will stick to the balloon and the hair stuck on the dogs body would stay there
