Physical Properties • Mass: amount of matter in an object • Measured in grams • Weight: measure of the pull of gravity on an object • Measured in newtons • Volume: amount of space that an object takes up • Can be measured using a graduated cylinder • Can be calculated (Length x Width x Height) • Density: the concentration of matter in an object • Can be calculated (mass ÷ volume) • Solubility: ability to be dissolved

  6. Three States of Matter • Solid: has definite shape & definite volume • Liquid: has definite volume, but no definite shape • Gas: no definite shape or volume

  7. Changes Between States • Freezing: liquid solid • Melting: solid liquid • Boiling: liquid gas

  8. Physical & Chemical Changes in Matter • Physical changes: • no new substances are formed • Changes in state • Chemical changes: • One or more new substances are formed • Also called chemical reactions *Matter is neither produced nor destroyed during these changes
