Required Materials • Binder with 8 dividers and loose-leaf notebook paper • Pen • Pencil • Homework assignments, etc. • A WINNING ATTITUDE!!!
What We Study • Grammar review and clarification • Literary Terms/Styles • The Short Story • Research paper/project with assigned topics related to readings • The Great Depression and John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men • The Odyssey, Greek and other mythologies • Multicultural literature • Media literacy, including current events two or three times per six weeks • Renaissance England and William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet • Poetry writing (original and adapted) • Narrative, Literary Response, Descriptive, and Persuasive writing forms will be regularly practiced, in addition to research writing. • Vocabulary
The H Word • Yes, I do assign homework. • No, I don’t assign very much of it. • Your student SHOULD have a copy of the English I textbook he/she can leave at home until the end of the year (English II students do not).
Classroom Expectations • Feel free to do anything that does not cause a problem for anyone else. • I teach when there are no distractions or other problems. • I listen to students who raise their hands. I listen to one person at a time. • Please treat me with respect – the same way I treat you. • Please address me by my name – the same way I address you. • If someone causes a problem, I will ask him or her to fix it. If they cannot or will not fix it, I will enact consequences.
Grading Policies • Daily Grades = 40% (at least 9 grades/six wks) • Test Grades = 60% (at least 3 grades/six wks) • Quizzes = 2 Daily Grades • Projects = 2 or more Test Grades • Make Up Work = 1day’s make up time per day absent • Late Work = 10 points off per day, no work accepted after the 3rd day
YOU are your student’s most important teacher! • Be sure your child gets healthy meals and snacks, and expect him/her to get a good night’s sleep. • Ask to see your child’s homework each night. • Keep in touch with your child’s counselor and teaching staff. • Check Skyward often! • Check teacher websites often! • Model a love of learning for your child through reading – newspapers, books, textbooks. No child is too young nor too old to benefit from being read to and given one-on-one time with mom or dad.
