What you should be able to do when you leave here today. • I can identify the problems associated with industrialization, urbanization, and immigration • I can explain how people worked to solve the problems they faced during the Progressive Era • I can explain the successes and failures of the different reform movements during the Progressive Era

  3. Problems with Urbanization, Industrialization, Immigration • Lack of Jobs • People willing to work for low wages (causes conflict) • Overcrowded • No place to live/work • Sanitation • All these people and all that trash and terrible living situations

  4. How People Solved Problems • Muckrakers-Wrote about it. • Ida Tarbell, Lincoln Steffens, Upton Sinclair • Fighting for Civil Rights • NAACP, Anti-Defamation League (ADL) • Using the law and the people. • Court Rooms • People taking the power back

  5. Success and Failure • Success: • Direct Primary • 17th Amendment (Voters elect Senators) • Secret ballot • Initiative (Vote on Proposed Laws) • Referendum (Allows voters to approve or reject a recent law that was passed) • Recall (Remove elected officials from office) • MOST OF ALL-They got people thinking

  6. Failures • Failures: • Are poor people still exploited at times? • Do some business owners still walk on their employees? • Can consumers still purchase janky products? • Do some people still live in crappy housing? • Is there still crazy competition for jobs? • Is everyone treat equal?
