Present Progressive The “ing” verbs
Present Progressive • Is used to say what is happening right now. • Rosa is singing. • We are eating. • To form the present progressive, you must combine a form of “estar” with the endings –ando (-ar) /-iendo (-er/-ir). • “estar” + root(-ando/-iendo) • Rosa estácantando. • Nosotrosestamoscomiendo.
Try it: • I am writing. • I am • Estoy • Escribir • Iendo • Estoy escribiendo. • You are talking. • You are • estás • Hablar • Ando • Estás hablando.
Tomar en nota: • If the stem of an “-er” or “-ir” verb ends in a vowel (leer): • Form the present participle by changing the “I” in “iendo” to a “Y” • Estoy leyendo. • I am reading. • The verbs IR and VENIR are not usually used in the present progressive. • Use simple present instead: • ¿Vienes a la fiesta? • No, voy a la biblioteca.
