Action PlanIntel ISEF 2014Educator AcademyMay 2014 Sri Lanka
High Level Goals • What we want to accomplish for Sri Lanka • Long term goals (3-5 years) • Every secondary school in the country (5000) to participate at national science and engineering competitions Make research based projects an important part of school curriculum • Develop an online registration process for competitions • Short term goals (1-2 years) • Promote JIY, SRPC, SLSEF and Intel ISEF among schools • Strengthen local competitions with workshops • Improve scientific review and judging process • Prepare students to be competitive at Intel ISEF 2014 • Establishment of Intel ISEF alumni
Objectives • Results we expect as proof of success: • Number of students participating at national science and engineering competitions increased to 5,000 in 5 years • 50% of the projects to show evidence of scientific research methodology • Train judges to improve quality of assessment and thus improve selection at national competitions • Students to be competitive at Intel ISEF 2014
Possible follow up for the Future • Improve the standards of the projects submitted to the local competitions/ Intel ISEF • Promotion of the participants of Intel ISEF as Science leaders and utilization of their experience to motivate other school children • Possibility of establishment of a NSF Student scholarship programme for the school children to conduct research projects • A training programme for the teachers and school children at research/ scientific institutes to provide hands on experience to conduct experiments.
Possible follow up for the Future contd. • Conduct a survey among the participants of the SLSEF/Intel ISEF • Create a database on participants of the local competitions to avoid duplication of the projects • Identification of research priorities (eg: traditional knowledge) to conduct research projects • Create a database on trends in science based on foresight analysis done by other countries, encourage students to conduct projects accordingly
Intel ISEF Educator Academy • Key learning from the Educator Academy • Inquiry based learning, research based science curriculum, Intel future scientist programme • Most beneficial Shop Talks for team • “Iteration: The Key to Successful STEM Programming” Amanda Alonzo, California, USA • “Strong Partnerships and Cultural Change for improvement of Science and Engineering” – JayavilalMeegoda, Sri Lanka • Types of Shop Talks missing • Reflective thinking based on data • Accessibility of data to avoid duplication of past research at ISEF
