How Do Uniforms Effect Middle School Students? By: Emily Serafini
Discussion Overview Arguments for uniforms Arguments against uniforms Legal issues Conclusion
Personal Experience of Amanda Boccolucci Our Lady of Sacred Heart Elementary School Kindergarten-5th Grade Frontier Public Middle School 6th-8th Grade “I don’t think it really affected me. It was just a rule I had to follow.”
Those who support uniforms believe… Lower rates of violence/crime Improve discipline and classroom behavior Improve attendance Improve academic achievement Lower clothing costs Level the playing field Foster school unity Increase student self-esteem/motivation Easier to identify outsiders
Amanda says… “Having a uniform did make it easier in the mornings. There is no pressure as to what to wear every day and everyone is wearing the same thing so no one really judges you for your clothes.”
Those who oppose uniforms say… • Socioeconomic status is easily identifiable and will still exist in schools • Not the answer to all problems • Religious objections • Will not eliminate gang mentality • May actually help “hide” signs of gang activity • Issue of constitutionality • NO EMPIRICAL RESEARCH!
Amanda says… “I don’t think it really affected me. It was just a rule I had to follow. The whole thing about uniforms making everyone equal is false though. There are still cliques.”
Jessica PoblockiBaker VictoryPreschool “At this age, kids are very concerned about their appearance and who is wearing the latest trend. Kids are ostracized based on the logo on their shirt or a lack of. When students wear uniforms I notice that they are less worried about what everyone is wearing and more focused on academics... However, I cannot say that the sole implementation of uniforms magically fixes the many problems in schools. That seems far-fetched.”
Legal Issues • First Amendment • Right to free expression • Supreme Court Decisions • Tinker v. Des Moines (1969) • Bethel School District v. Fraser (1986) • Canady v. Bossier Parish School Board (2001)
Conclusion School uniforms can be used as part of a larger plan with the implementation of various factors, not as the cure to all school problems. • More research must be conducted in order to back up teacher/administrator reports.
